DIRECTOR/WRITER
Jan Bonny is a multi-award winning screenwriter and director. His work spans across feature film, art film, theater, and advertising. His graduation film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), “Gegenüber,” starring Matthias Brandt, with whom he still has a close collaboration, premiered at the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival. The film went on to win the Best Screenplay Award at the Munich Film Festival and received a nomination for “European Discovery” at the European Film Awards.
In 2018 he was also invited to the Locarno Competition for “Wintermärchen,” a radical portrait of a three-person terror cell. It screened worldwide and received seven nominations and three wins at the German Critics Awards 2020, including Best Film. In 2022 co-written “Muss ja nicht sein, dass es heute ist“ (directed by Sophia Gröning) screened in Oberhausens German Competion and won the Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis 2022 and Preis der Deutschen Filmkritik 2023.
In his numerous critically acclaimed television productions, e.g. „Über Barbarossaplatz“ (2015), Bonny has remained true to his signature style. He received the Grimme Award in the Best Fiction 2021 category for “Wir wären andere Menschen” and the Deutscher Fernsehpreis 2023 for Netflix Series „King of Stonks“, both starring Matthias Brandt. His work on BMWs nextgen Series with Christoph Waltz and Arnold Schwarzenegger brought ADC and Montreux Gold in 2021.
In repeated collaborations with artist Alex Wissel, he has created experimental works at the intersection of visual arts, theater and film, including titles such as “Single” (2014) and “Rheingold” (2018, in co-production with Volksbühne Berlin), „Freiheit ist das Einzigste, was zählt“ (2023, ZDF) or "HA HA M.K.B.H. Was ist schlimmer als verlieren?“ (2024), that were screend at mumok Vienna, Kunstsammlung NRW, Kestnergesellschaft, Julia Stoschek Collection among others. Most recently, in 2021, he staged “Philoktet” by Heiner Müller at Theater Basel.
2024 sees Paramount+ production „Der Panther“ as part of the anthology series „Zeit Verbrechen“ premiere at Berlinale Panorama, starring Lars Eidinger, and „Man muss sich Mephisto als glücklichen Menschen vorstellen“ at Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf.

Zeit Verbrechen - DER PANTHER
“Der Panther” is part of a anthology series for Paramount+, based on the famous podcast “Zeit Verbrechen”. X Filme Creative Pool produced the mini series. Jan Bonny has also co-written the screenplay.
It had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival 2024 in the "Panorama" section. Time and place of the series' release is not yet known.
The film will be screened at the Film Festival Cologne on October 19 and the series will take part in the TeleVisionale Baden-Baden in November.
MAN MUSS SICH MEPHISTO ALS EINEN GLÜCKLICHEN MENSCHEN VORSTELLEN
The theater play will premiere at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus on October 18, 2024. Jan Bonny wrote the script together with Jan Eichberg and is directing the play.
It is based on fragments of the novel "Mephisto" by Klaus Mann.
